The first Barter Week taking place from 16 to 22 November 2009 was a great success. The extraordinary results the event produced in both terms of tourism flow and the number of B&Bs taking part in the initiative are themselves reasons for the organizers – the tourism website www.bed-and-breakfast.it – to envisage a second Barter Week to take place in the third week of November 2010.
The event formula – specifically relying on barter as a payment medium – captured the interest of media as much as of travellers. Enthusiasm for the Barter Week transpired from the very beginning: a few days from the event, the Facebook Page Gruppo Facebook had totalled nearly ten thousand fans. In the end, something like twelve thousand registered to exchange ideas, opinions and proposals.
The current economic downturn worked as an additional force. During this time of restraints, the possibility for couples and single travellers to barter goods or services against a stay at a B&B of their choice was a unique opportunity. In fact B&Bs have in the last years copiously spread in Italy attesting to a growing tendency towards these – more economic and intimate – lodging organizations.
Additional evidence – as if any were needed – for the success of the Barter Week is the quantity of barter proposals that B&Bs continue to receive - and to consider – now that the event is gone. For this reason, a list of B&Bs where the Barter formula continues to be offered at different periods throughout the year was created.
