The Agriturismo Pilato (Pilato Agritourism Farm) is situated in the upper Agrò Valley and lies below Montagna Grande (1374 m), the highest peak in the Peloritani mountains, from which can be seen majestic Etna and the sea as far as the Calabrian coast.
It consists of 3 recently restored buildings, 2 of which house the guest accommodation; these structures were originally used in part by the proprietors and their teams of pickers, in part as shelters for the farm animals which provided a vital support for the people who lived permanently in the valley.
The Pilato Agritourism Farm’s restoration project was founded with a view to recreating a traditional way of life which has almost disappeared the Agrò valley; the intention is to bring new life to those rural techniques and related economies which have all but vanished. Working together with the local people is an essential condition of the project’s implementation.
The Farm is set amidst woods of chestnut, oak and hazel, through which flows the Agrò torrent giving its name to the valley. Its privileged position and the landscape of the territory make it an ideal location for trekking and mountain biking and any type of off-road activity, while at the same time peace and quiet is assured for all those who prefer to pass their days in complete relaxation, far from the noises and stresses of civilisation.
The Pilato Agritourism Farm is run with respect for the insect life found in the area, favouring local organic cultivation, and seeks to maintain the traditional farming methods which have characterised the region’s agricultural economy since time immemorial. Apart from hazelnuts, chestnuts and walnuts, an excellent olive oil and a pleasant red wine are produced, as well as the fruit and vegetables, of course.
Guests wishing to do so may participate in the Farm’s activities and follow the various phases of cultivation culminating in the harvesting of the fruit which the land so generously offers up.
